El Paso, TX (6/30/2020) – A woman is now dead after being hit by a vehicle on the side of the road in El Paso Sunday night.
The accident happened around 8:17 p.m. in the 6400 block of Mohair.
Jazmin Renteria, 28, and her brother were walking eastbound on the right side of Mohair when a Mitsubishi Galant, driven by Christopher Roney, 31, struck her. Police claim Roney was looking back at a toddler in the backseat when he struck Renteria.
She died at the scene from her injuries.
Crash investigators will review all factors that may have led up to the accident and police reports will be made available in fourteen days.
Unfortunately, pedestrians are at a disadvantage when it comes to personal safety on the streets of Texas. Motorists frequently fail to see pedestrians on or alongside busy roads, and it only takes a second for a serious accident to occur.
Pedestrian accidents are most likely to occur when:
- Careless drivers ignore the presence of pedestrians in pedestrian-friendly areas such as parking lots or school zones;
- Pedestrians cross the street without the aid of a signal or crosswalk;
- Motorists fail to turn on their headlights at night; and
- Drivers fail to yield the right-of-way at intersections.
