Austin, TX (1/21/2020) – A man and woman are dead after another man driving at high speeds crashed into their vehicle on Highway 71 in Austin.
The accident occurred around 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning. DPS states that an Acura driven by 49-year-old Jose Luis Vasquez, and his passenger Joann Menchaca, 45, was crossing across the westbound lanes when 21-year-old Joseph Diaz struck them with his Audi. According to the affidavit, Diaz was going at high speeds, almost up to 120 mph, and weaving in and out of traffic because he was late for his flight.
Menchaca and Vasquez were ejected from the vehicle and killed at the scene.
Diaz was taken to the hospital, where he was interviewed. He was charged with manslaughter.
Crash investigators will review all factors that may have led up to the accident and police reports will be made available in fourteen days.
According to troopers, there was no brake path prior to the accident from Diaz’s vehicle and even surveillance video captured the speeds the Audi was exhibiting. This kind of evidence will hold up substantially in court, if the surviving family of Vasquez and Menchaca decide to file suit.
