Cherokee County, TX (9/20/2020) – A man was killed in a crash that occurred Sunday night in Cherokee County.

The accident happened around 11:10 p.m. on US 175. A Chrysler 300 was headed west on US 175 when it struck the back of an Audi A5 that was slowing to turn onto a private drive. The Audi then was pushed into a power pole and structure.

The driver of theChrysler, 25-year-old Uriel Rangel, was killed at the scene.

Two passengers, 18-year-old Jaden Portillo and 32-year-old Daniel Cruz, were taken to UT Health in Tyler in critical condition.

The driver of the Audi, 33-year-old Javier Corona, did not need medical transport.

Crash investigators will review all factors that may have led up to the accident and police reports will be made available in fourteen days.

According to NTSB, almost half of all two-vehicle crashes were rear-end crashes between 2012 and 2014. In addition, these crashes killed more than 1,700 people each year.

Furthermore, these kinds of crashes are ultimately a consequence of distracted driving or following too close behind a vehicle, as reported by the NHTSA
