Ackerly, TX (10/15/2020) – Three employees were injured after an explosion occurred Oct. 15 near Ackerly.

The incident happened at the Flower Grove Co-op Gin around 7:20 a.m. All three employees were inside an office in the gin when it exploded. The entire interior was destroyed and the outside was heavily damaged.

All three were taken to the hospital. Two were airlifted to UMC in Lubbock in serious condition and one was sent to a hospital in Lamesa.

Further investigation is being conducted but a fire marshal’s investigation found there may have been a butane leak no one knew about and was triggered when one of the men flipped a light switch inside.

Investigators will review all factors that may have led up to the accident and police reports will be made available in fourteen days.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2004 there were over 4.2 million job-related injuries and illnesses and over 5,700 on the job fatalities. When an injury occurs on the job, workers have a right to worker’s compensation. Workers’ compensation is typically provided by an employer to help an injured worker with his medical bills and lost wages.

Because three people left injured after a workplace accident, it’s important to file the necessary claims to be compensated.
