Gilmer, TX (7/17/2020) – A man is now dead after being involved in a hit-and-run wreck near Gilmer Friday morning.
The accident happened on U.S. Highway 271 North. A Dodge Ram pickup was driving north on the highway in the inside lane when he made an unsafe lane change and struck a Ford Crown Victoria. This caused the Ford to cross into the southbound lanes of traffic and was struck by a 2019 Kenworth truck-tractor and trailer.
The man driving the Ford, 38-year-old Frederick Fountain, was taken to a Tyler hospital, where he later died.
According to DPS, the driver of the Dodge fled the scene.
Crash investigators will review all factors that may have led up to the accident and police reports will be made available in fourteen days.
Hit-and-runs are one of the most common accidents that we see and often involve claims that take extensive investigation to resolve. This is because when someone leaves the scene, it can be pretty hard to track down the person who ran, and it can be hard to prove that the victim was indeed struck by another vehicle. It is also hard to deal with insurance companies in these situations because there are so many reasons that can be used to deny the claim in its entirety.
