El Paso, TX (4/23/2020) – A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle and was left with serious injuries Tuesday evening in El Paso.
The accident happened at Alameda Avenue around 7 p.m. when 38-year-old Joseph Cruz was struck. Driver Nareli Rosales, 27, was westbound on Alameda Drive while Cruz was eastbound. Rosales was making a south turn onto Washington Street as Cruz crossed the intersection.
Cruz suffered a life-threatening injury, where he remains in the hospital.
Rosales’s condition remains unknown.
Crash investigators will review all factors that may have led up to the accident and police reports will be made available in fourteen days.
Bicyclists are often subjected to hit-and-runs, illegal driving practices, serious injuries, and property damage. In 2018, 857 bicyclists died in traffic crashes in the United States. Cyclists don’t have the advantage of being encased in tons of protective technology like drivers and are more likely to be injured.
