El Paso, TX (12/11/2019) – A man was killed after he and another person stopped to help the driver of a stalled semi-truck and was thrown over an overpass after being hit Monday night.
According to police, two people got out of their GMC Sierra and assisted a stalled semi-truck on the ramp of Loop 375. This is when a Cadillac Escalade, driven by 24-year-old Martin Castaneda, came by and struck the rear of the big rig then the rear of the GMC. The GMC then hit the two pedestrians, 35-year-old Carlos Lechuga and 33-year-old Hector Martinez, and both were thrown off the overpass and fell four stories.
Lechuga and Mendoza were both transported to a nearby hospital. Lechuga died of his injuries Tuesday morning.
Castaneda suffered minor injuries.
No word has been reported on the condition of Mendoza.
Crash investigators will review all factors that may have led up to the accident and police reports will be made available in fourteen days.
