One Dead, Multiple Injured in Fatal Wreck

Martin County, TX (12/18/2020) – One person was killed and several others were injured in a fatal wreck involving five vehicles.

The wreck occurred Wednesday around 9:00 p.m. on Interstate 20 in Stanton. Traffic was halted to a stop due to congestion when a semi-truck driven by 37-year-old Jose Saenz came along, failed to control his speed, and crashed into the rear of another semi-truck driven by 26-year-old Jaafar Eskander. This caused Eskander’s semi to crash into the rear of a GMC Sierra towing a trailer driven by 35-year-old Marco Varela-Martinez and to crash into the rear of a box truck driven by 21-year-old Jorge Torres, which was pushed into another semi-truck driven by 51-year-old Tony Stewart.

Saenz was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Eskander was taken to Martin County Hospital for non-serious injuries.

Eskander’s passenger, 54-year-old Saleem E. Shafeea, was also taken to Martin County Hospital for non-serious injuries. 

Torres was transported to University Medical Center for serious injuries.

One of the passengers with Torres, Justin T. Alvarado, 28 of Odessa, was transported to University Medical Center in Lubbock with serious injuries. 

Varela-Martinez suffered non serious injuries and was transported to Martin County Medical Center in Stanton.

The passengers, Jesus A. Varela-Martinez, 31, Leo Varel-Martinez, 4, Amy Varela-Martinez, 8, and Alondra Estrada, 28, all of Garland, were transported to Martin County Hospital in Stanton for non serious injuries.

Crash investigators will review all factors that may have led up to the accident and police reports will be made available in fourteen days.
