Axtell, TX (12/31/2019) – One person is dead and another is injured after a wrong way collision occurred on FM 2311 Friday, Dec. 27, outside of Axtell.
The accident occurred south of Olive Branch Road around 5:45 p.m. when a Volkswagen Jetta going north crashed into a Chevy Equinox going south in the southbound lanes. The Equinox erupted in flames.
The driver of the Jetta, 26-year-old Bryan Callahan II, was killed at the scene.
The driver of the Equinox was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Crash investigators will review all factors that may have led up to the accident and police reports will be made available in fourteen days.
The results of the investigation will deduce why exactly Callahan shifted into the southbound lanes instead of staying north in his own directed lane. Bringing in an Engine Control Module (ECM) will be vital to the investigation, since it will record whether or not Callahan made an attempt to stop his vehicle before drifting into the opposite lane. Usually for wrong-way collisions, lack of sleep, intoxication, or distracted driving are big influencers as to why these kinds of accidents occur.
