Teacher Killed in Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident

Silsbee, TX (9/13/2020) – A Silsbee High School teacher was killed in a hit-and-run accident Sunday night.

The accident happened around 8 p.m., seven miles north of Silsbee. A Chevrolet struck a Kawasaki motorcycle that Mark Wallace, 61, was riding on FM 92. He was knocked off his motorcycle and then struck by a Dodge pickup truck shortly after. 

Wallace was killed at the scene. 

The driver of the Chevrolet, 53-year-old Jerry Sangwin, was found dead at his home after fleeing the scene. 

The man driving the pickup was not injured.

Crash investigators will review all factors that may have led up to the accident and police reports will be made available in fourteen days.

Under Texas law, a hit-and-run accident is referred to as “leaving the scene.” These accidents involve any driver who knowingly hits a vehicle and intentionally drives off, failing to leave his or her contact information, call for help, or render aid.
