North Richland Hills, TX (11/28/2019) – A teenager and a dog are dead, and one other person is injured after an alleged intoxicated driver drove the wrong-way on Interstate 820 on Thursday, November 28.
Noemi Martinez was driving a black Chevy Tahoe around 5:15 a.m. when she drove into oncoming traffic and struck two SUV’s and a sedan.
The driver of the sedan, identified as 17-year-old Benjamin Castaneda, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries the next day. His dog also perished in the crash.
A second driver was transported to the hospital where they remain in stable condition.
No other major injuries were reported from the other vehicle involved.
Martinez was transported to a nearby hospital. She was released and now resides in jail with a charge of intoxication manslaughter.
Crash investigators will review all factors that may have led up to the accident and police reports will be made available in fourteen days.
According to the FHWA, in the United States, WWD crashes result in 300 to 400 people killed each year on average, representing approximately 1 percent of the total number of traffic related fatalities that occur annually. Although this is a small percent, these crashes have the deadliest fatalities since they usually occur at high speeds.
