5 Family Members Killed in Car Crash in Victoria, Texas

Victoria, TX (July 20, 2019) – Five people are dead and seven people are seriously injured after a major car accident near Victoria, Texas.

The three vehicle collision happened Saturday around 10:30 a.m. on Highway 59 and the Telferner exit north of Victoria.

According to Sergeant Ruben Miguel with the Texas Department of Public Safety, the white passenger van was carrying 10 family members traveling for vacation.

The van was heading northbound on Highway 59, when it entered the freeway and clipped the left rear of an 18-wheeler. The van lost control, crossed the median into oncoming traffic and collided with a Ford F-250.

Five people in the van died at the scene. The driver, Nora Gabriela Chavez, 42. The passengers are Oscar Chavez, 45; Adrian Leal Rodriguez, 47; Camila Rodriguez, 13; and 6-year-old Sebastian Rodriguez.

The surviving passengers are Edna Hernandez, 38; Andres Chavez, 19; Oscar Alejandro Chavez, 21; Andrea Chavez, 17; and 13-year-old Edna Rodriguez. Each of these passengers is being treated at different hospitals.

The driver of the truck has been identified as Oscar Garza, 55, and the passenger and wife Anna Bettancourt, 51, were injured and transported to Citizens Medical Center. They have been released.

Dennis Lee Harridge, 58, the driver of the 18-wheeler, was not injured.

Crash investigators will review all factors that may have led up to the accident and police reports will be made available in fourteen days.
