Deer Park, Texas (Oct. 10, 2024) – Officials are reporting that at least two people are dead and 35 more have been injured after a chemical leak at Pemex Oil Refinery in Deer Park.
First responders in Deer Park reported to the facility after receiving reports of a hydrogen sulfide leak at the facility. The incident triggered the announcement of a shelter-in-place for surrounding communities in Deer Park and Pasadena.
The Harris County Sheriff’s department was part of the response teams along with other first responders. The sheriff’s office confirmed that after the leak occurred, two people were confirmed dead and 35 more were receiving medical care as a result of coming in contact with the chemical.
Hydrogen sulfide, the chemical involved in the leak, is a colorless gas that protrudes a smell of rotten eggs. This toxic gas is commonly used in the oil refining process.
An investigation into what caused the leak to occur is currently underway.
